How to Install a Retro Bulkhead Light on a Metal Surface
As a trusted supplier of retro bulkhead lights, I understand the charm and functionality these lights bring to any space. Retro bulkhead lights not only add a touch of vintage elegance but also provide reliable illumination. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the process of installing a retro bulkhead light on a metal surface, ensuring a safe and successful installation.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Before you start the installation process, gather the following tools and materials:
- Retro bulkhead light fixture
- Screwdriver set (both flathead and Phillips)
- Drill with appropriate drill bits for metal
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Electrical wire strippers
- Wire connectors
- Electrical tape
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Step 1: Plan the Installation
The first step in installing a retro bulkhead light on a metal surface is to plan the installation carefully. Decide where you want to place the light fixture. Consider factors such as the area you want to illuminate, the height at which the light will be most effective, and any obstacles that might interfere with the installation.
Use a measuring tape to mark the exact location on the metal surface where you'll install the light. Make sure the area is clean and free of any debris or rust. If there is rust, use a wire brush to remove it before proceeding.
Step 2: Prepare the Electrical Wires
Safety is of utmost importance when working with electricity. Before you begin any electrical work, turn off the power supply to the area where you'll be installing the light. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off.
Once you've confirmed that the power is off, remove the cover of the electrical box on the metal surface. This will expose the electrical wires. Use wire strippers to remove about ¾ inch of insulation from the ends of the electrical wires.
Step 3: Mount the Light Bracket
Most retro bulkhead lights come with a mounting bracket. Place the mounting bracket on the marked location on the metal surface. Use a level to ensure that the bracket is perfectly horizontal or vertical, depending on the orientation of the light.

Once the bracket is level, use a drill to make holes in the metal surface through the holes in the mounting bracket. Insert the appropriate screws through the holes in the bracket and into the holes in the metal surface. Tighten the screws securely using a screwdriver.
Step 4: Connect the Electrical Wires
Now it's time to connect the electrical wires from the light fixture to the electrical wires in the box. Most retro bulkhead lights have three wires: a black (hot) wire, a white (neutral) wire, and a green or bare copper (ground) wire.
Match the black wire from the light fixture to the black (hot) wire in the electrical box. Connect the white wire from the light fixture to the white (neutral) wire in the box. Finally, connect the green or bare copper wire from the light fixture to the grounding wire in the box.
Use wire connectors to secure the connections. Twist the wire connectors clockwise onto the ends of the connected wires until they are tight. Wrap each connection with electrical tape for added safety.
Step 5: Attach the Light Fixture
Once the electrical connections are secure, carefully lift the light fixture and align it with the mounting bracket. Slide the light fixture onto the bracket and secure it in place using the provided screws or clips. Make sure the light fixture is firmly attached to the bracket.
Step 6: Test the Light
Before you replace the cover of the electrical box, turn the power supply back on. Use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is on. Switch on the light switch to test the light. If the light doesn't come on, turn off the power supply again and double - check your electrical connections.
Step 7: Finish the Installation
Once you've confirmed that the light is working properly, replace the cover of the electrical box. Make sure the cover is securely in place.
Congratulations! You've successfully installed a retro bulkhead light on a metal surface.
Additional Tips
- If you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's always a good idea to hire a licensed electrician.
- Consider using a waterproof sealant around the edges of the light fixture and the mounting bracket to prevent water from seeping in, especially if the light is installed outdoors.
