Common Landscape Lighting Fixtures
Navigating through the many types of landscape lighting fixtures can be confusing. The following definitions should help clarify the various fixture types and their common applications.
Spotlights – They are also known as uplights, directional lights or bullets. Downlights are also a type of spotlight. Spotlights are very versatile landscape lighting fixtures because they are able to support a large variety of bulbs, beam widths and wattages. Uplighting trees are one of the most common uses for these lighting fixtures. The most popular landscape lighting spotlighting techniques are highlighting, silhouetting, shadowing, grazing, moonlighting, spotlighting and flood lighting.
Path & Area Lights – Path lights will aim the light down and to the side of the fixture, lighting up paths and walkways. Area lights also aim the lights down, however, they light up the entire area around the fixture. They can be used to light pathways, but also work well to highlight other areas of the home such as a landscape bed. Be sure to pick a path light or area light that is aesthetically pleasing since they will be the most visible.
Flood lights – A great way to add more security and to light up your yard at night is to install flood lights. Even though spotlights can act as flood lights, they are not specifically made for that purpose. Flood lights commonly have a much higher wattage and wider angle than spotlights. They are often used in 120 volt or commercial applications.
Wall Wash Lights – This is a type of flood light is specifically designed to provide fairly even illumination across a wide surface. They are used for any application that seeks to fully illuminate a surface, rather than applying an oval- or wedge-shaped illumination.
Well Lights – Well and in-grade lights include any fixture installed so the majority of the fixture is below ground (grade) level. They are used in applications where the fixture must be in a turf area (so lawn mowers can go over them) or for hardscape applications where foot or vehicular traffic may pass over the fixture. Another reason to use well lights is when the light beam needs to start very close to the ground. For example, when lighting a column it is ideal for the illumination to start at the base of the column. A staked directional fixture is taller so its illumination starts between 6-12 inches from the ground; a well light can illuminate surfaces only a few inches from the ground.
Deck Lights – Since most decks are adjacent to railings, most deck lights are designed to attach to fence posts. They are also useful for mounting on the sides of nearby structures and stairs.
Step Lights – Steps are composed of two main parts – treads (the flat horizontal pieces) and risers (the vertical pieces attached the back of each tread). The treads may be illuminated by fixtures mounted to the risers, or by fixtures mounted to side walls. Some of the same fixtures used for deck lighting also work for steps. So both types are included in the step lighting category.
Hardscape Lights – Hardscapes refer to landscape features made of stones, bricks, tiles or other hard materials. The most common hardscapes are patios, walkways, driveways, stairs, walls and outdoor kitchens or fireplaces. Most hardscape lights are those that attach to the underside of capstones and overhangs. They are easy to hide and provide subtle floodlighting of hardscape surfaces.
LED lights aren't just for Christmas anymore. Adding colored led lights to your property can be a great way to add decoration and visibility all year round.
For the best results, we recommend using low voltage waterproof LED lighting products. These lights will be able to hold up to outdoor weather conditions.
Let's take a closer look at 5 facts you should know about using waterproof led lights at your home.
Waterproof LED Lights Increase Safety
Walking in the dark can be dangerous. Even on the short walk from your car to your front door, it can be easy to trip and fall. This is especially true when your driveway gets icy in the winter.
Adding LED path lights can make it easier to see where you're going. This will also be helpful for guests, who aren't as familiar with your home.
Add Ambiance to Your Home
Of course, functionality isn't the only consideration when installing LED lights. They also add ambiance and atmosphere to your property.
We love that LED lights come in different colors. This means that you can be truly creative when using them to decorate your home.
Landscape lighting comes in different shapes and sizes, and with different fixtures. Depending on your needs, you can use lamp posts or hanging lights. You can even use LED strips to light up steps leading into your home.
Use Lights to Make Your Outdoor Space More Inviting
There are few things more relaxing than enjoying a drink on your back deck on a cool evening. If your yard has poor lighting, however, it can start to get creepy at night. Additionally, it will be difficult to see your guests.
LED garden lighting can add visibility to your backyard in an elegant way. Adding some waterproof LED strips to your deck can transform it into a sophisticated entertaining space.
Light Up Your Pool
Since these led lights are waterproof, that means you can use them in your pool. This is a great way to create atmosphere and added safety.
If your pool is lit up at night, it will be easier to see. This will decrease the risk that you or someone else will fall in and hurt themselves. Additionally, once you have lights in your pool, you can enjoy a nighttime swim.
Why Install Landscape Lighting
It's easy to see the benefits of installing landscape lighting fixtures to the exterior of your home: Well-planned and positioned lights improve the aesthetic beauty of your yard by highlighting attractive features. They also improve security in several ways, helping to deter crime and prevent falls.
Landscape lighting fixtures come in a wide variety of styles and designs. Some fixtures are small solar-powered lights that you stick in the ground, while others are wall-mounted and hardwired into your home's electrical system.
Which lighting fixtures are right for you? It's easier to know once you decide the role your landscape lighting will play. Are you strictly interested in showcasing architectural or design features? Do you want to illuminate your backyard patio and create the perfect atmosphere for an evening outside with friends? Or is your major interest home security.
As you consider the options, remember: The right choice, well-installed, may help you achieve all your landscape lighting goals!

Reason #1: Landscape Lighting is Lovely
No doubt about it: Landscape lighting will drastically improve the look of your home in the early evenings and throughout the night. Exterior light fixtures can beautifully highlight your home's architecture and design. In addition, when lights are positioned properly, they can also showcase the bountiful plants you've worked so hard to cultivate. As a bonus, for proud homeowners and those looking to sell, landscape lighting also increases your home's curb appeal.
Reason #2: Landscape Lights Add Functionality
With the addition of great landscape lighting, you can make the most of your outdoor space. The right fixtures enable you to spend more time enjoying your front porch, back patio, or garden landscape - day or night, the space is accessible and appealing. In addition, lighting fixtures strategically placed around your outdoor living spaces can add drama (the good kind) and make late-night dining or relaxing during the spring, summer, and fall even more enjoyable.

Reason #3: Landscape Lighting Improves Home Security
When the exterior of your home is well lit, criminals consider it less approachable; there are fewer places to hide. Because of that, adding outdoor light fixtures to your home may help deter thieves, trespassers, and vandals.
The placement of landscape lighting for security is key. Installing light fixtures around your home's doors and windows make it less likely someone can break in unnoticed. Be sure to also consider the darkest parts of your yard and home, and whether floodlights or motion-sensor lights would be useful.
Reason #4: Keep You and Your Family Safe
In addition to protecting your home and belongings, landscape lighting can help keep you and your family free of injury. By shining a light on steps, ledges, ramps, or other elevated pathways, you can help prevent falls. This is especially important if you have elderly family or friends, or any visitors with vision challenges.
If you own a pool, it's important to keep the surrounding area well lit. Lights around the pool can reduce the risk of someone falling in or slipping on wet concrete.

The Role of Outdoor Lighting in Mental Health
Understanding the positive impacts of nature is important to understanding how outdoor lighting can play a role in your mental health. Since most people work 9-5 jobs, the amount of time they get to spend outdoors is limited. The sun is often dipping below the horizon as soon as everything for the day is settled and individuals can relax. Outdoor lighting allows homeowners to enjoy Mother Nature even after the sun has gone down. Here's how:
A Place to Escape
The world today is wrapped up in a whirlwind of getting from one place to another, work, electronic screens, and information bombarding our brains almost every second of the day. It is no wonder that more and more people are looking for a place to escape so they can just breathe. A softly lit outdoor living space gives you and your brain a place to escape from a chaotic world.
When it comes to lighting outdoor spaces, using warm and soft tones is key. Not only does this type of lighting encourage a sense of relaxation, but it is the exact opposite of the light from your phone or computer screen. This allows your eyes to rest so your mind can focus on the beauty that surrounds you and truly enjoy the comforting sounds of nature.
With outdoor lighting, you can go to your safe space, such as an outdoor kitchen, outdoor living room, or even an outdoor pool without worrying about it being too dark. Soft outdoor lighting gives you the freedom to enjoy your backyard space even though the sun isn't out. Extending the time that you can spend outside gives individuals a chance to stroll through their garden or enjoy a quiet moment by the pool, no matter how hectic their schedule.
A Sense of Security
There is a reason horror movies make heavy use of dark settings. Dark settings raise our sense of danger and make us feel insecure and vulnerable. Without light, our visual senses are weakened or in some cases, completely gone. Without the ability to visually see what is around us, we feel more vulnerable to harm in the form of intruders, bugs, or even tripping.
With outdoor lighting, this fear of what lays in the darkness is taken away. The light chases away the shadows and shows us what is underneath. It also makes it harder for intruders to sneak around our property, providing you and your family with a stronger sense of security. Outdoor lighting is especially useful for individuals who may want to take the trash out at night, take a stroll around their garden, or simply check the mailbox. With the darkness gone, they can step out of their home with confidence.
A Sense of Appreciation
You take great care and attention with your home, and the darkness can make that hard to see sometimes. With beautiful outdoor lighting, you can come home to an immaculately lit house that highlights all you have accomplished and built.
According to a mental health study by two psychologists from the University of Miami, having a grateful attitude about the life you have built has proven to keep individuals in a happier frame of mind. For this study, individuals were placed into three groups. One was asked to write down things they were grateful for, the second was asked to write down things that irritated them during their normal day, and the third was asked to write a few sentences about their daily lives. Individuals who were asked to focus on the things they were grateful for throughout the study were shown to be more optimistic, motivated, active, and went to the doctor less.
Outdoor lighting allows you to take pride in the home that you built for yourself and your family. With professional outdoor lighting, you can add an extra layer of beauty to your home by highlighting the architecture, the grounds surrounding your home, and any special features such as a garden or pool. Be welcomed home by the brilliance of the life you built and enjoy a quiet evening surrounded by nature, your family, and friends in your own outdoor living space.
1) Have the Right Items
You'll need three things before you can start: a Transformer, Cable, and the Lights.
The transformer is the heart of the system. To determine what size you'll need, just follow this simple formula:
Add together the wattage of your individual lights
Multiply that total by 1.5
The total is the transformer size, in watts, that you'll need.
You can remove the guesswork by choosing a complete landscape lighting kit that gives you everything you need.
2) Find Your Power Source
You can plug most low-voltage transformers into a GIF grounded outdoor outlet just like you would any lamp. Save on cable by finding an outlet closest to your lighting needs.
3) Pick Your Location – No Digging Needed
We recommend simply running cables along the ground and tucking them behind plantings or covering them lightly with dirt or mulch. Most light fixtures include stakes so you can simply insert them in the ground.
4) Go LED
These lights use less energy, allowing you to run your system on a smaller, less costly transformer…and they last far longer than other bulb types, with virtually zero maintenance.
5) Less Is More
A little light can go a long way outdoors. Create layers by using a combination of path lights, up lights and flood lights.
